TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TransCore’s spot market Canadian freight index saw a substantial 13 percent month-over-month increase in May. The month also had the highest freight volume to date this year. Year-over-year volumes were off slightly from the peaks of early 2011, down two percent from May of last year and only five percent off the record set in 2008.

Cross-border postings remained consistent at 73 percent of overall load postings. Intra-Canada postings made up 23 percent of the total load volumes.

Equipment postings also experienced double digit increases; ten percent month over month and fifteen percent year over year. While both equipment & loads postings increased, the May equipment to loads ratio dropped to the lowest levels in 2012.

Top destinations for loads imported into Canada were:
  • Ontario 54 percent
  • Western 20 percent
  • Quebec 22 percent
  • Atlantic 3 percent
Western Canada had a slight decrease month over month, while Quebec had a two percent increase
Top regions for import equipment into Canada were:
  • Ontario 51 percent
  • Western 25 percent
  • Quebec 21 percent
  • Atlantic 3 percent
Equipment postings maintained similar levels from the previous month
Regions of origins of loads within Canada were:
  • Western 45 percent
  • Ontario 26 percent
  • Quebec 21 percent
  • Atlantic 7 percent
Western Canada had a slight decrease month over month
The top states of origin for loads destined to Canada in order of most loads were Ohio, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania & Texas
The top destinations for freight originating in Canada were New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, California & Washington.
